As I tried to rediscover the long-lost link to an on-line personal development community yesterday, I came across yet another scathing review of a giant in the speaking industry.
When people ask what I do for a living, and I share that I am a professional speaker, I often hear: “Ohhhhh, do you brainwash people, like (insert name of guru here) and scam them out of all their money?”
If the person who wrote that review, or someone they care about, has ever attended an event led by one of the top-of-the-mountain rock star earners in my field, somehow I get nailed by Trickle-Down-Criticism…as though I operate on the same plane.
Do I like and respect everyone in my industry?
Ohhhhh, hell no.
Do I believe they all operate from the level of integrity I promise myself I will live by?
Again (and I am risking a lightning strike here if I am lying)…hell no.
Good, no lightning.
I can only speak for myself, and why I got into this business.
I believe speakers can be agents for change. We get on a stage and share what we have learned, hoping that our experiences can help others reach desired outcomes in their lives (and businesses) while avoiding some of the pain we experienced.
It is my mission to take every stage with passion, humility, humor, authenticity, integrity and every other quality that I feel my audiences deserve.
This is how I survive.
This is how my business grows.
And hopefully, this is how I avoid the boot-prints from those who bash my industry because of what others have done to it.
It is my most sincere hope that your mission is to do the same in whatever you do
The stage is yours…
